This bauble is decorated with a fragment from a Delft blue tile tableau from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The tile tableau comes from the Orphanage in Sommelsdijk (Goeree-Overflakkee), was made around 1725, consists of 96 tiles and shows a large vase with plates, flowers, birds and butterflies. The artist is unknown.
Delft blue, typically Dutch?
The origin of the world-famous Delft earthenware dates back to early 1600. In the 17th century, the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) ships brought not only spices back from China, but also blue on white decorated porcelain. This porcelain quickly became very popular with the wealthy of that time such as the European royal houses. When the import came to a standstill by a civil war in China, the Dutch pottery manufacturers grabbed their chance and started the imitation of this blue and white decorated porcelain. This was the start of the Dutch production of Delft blue, now known worldwide as a purely Dutch product.
About the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is the most iconic museum in the Netherlands. The completely revamped museum reopened its doors to the public in 2013, from the renovated Cuypers Cathedral on Museumplein (Museum Square) in Amsterdam. A breathtaking building with an amazing interior and beautiful exhibitions. The Rijksmuseum is more than 200 years old and has had several locations. In 1885, the museum moved into the Cuypers Cathedral and the Rijks, as we know it today, was officially opened.
