Gables

Amsterdam is probably best known for its characteristically gabled houses which alongside the beautiful canals make for a historic city center that is both unique and breathtaking. It is no wonder that it is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Trade flourished in 17th century which led to an enormous growth in population. The canal ring was dug for transportation of people and goods. The plots along the waterfront were narrow in order to assure that a maximum number of houses had an entrance on a canal. To make their narrow houses nevertheless look impressive, Amsterdam’s merchants had them decorated with striking gables in accordance with the then fashionable renaissance style. The design evolved with the trend of the times, resulting in a range of distinct styles: The step gable, the spout gable, the neck gable and the bell gable. One thing stayed the same throughout the centuries: All of Amsterdam’s gables have a hoisting beam in order to move goods up and down.

Beech wood

This serving tray or cutting board is made of beech wood (Dutch: beukenhout) and has been treated with a special food proof oil. All wooden products are naturally subject to change and may develop cracks after some time.

In order to maintain its beautiful color and gloss, the serving tray should be treated with wax or oil on a regular basis. It should be cleaned with a soft brush, soap and lukewarm water before first use. The serving tray is not suitable for the dishwasher. Avoid long exposure to water and heat.
